When shopping for a new place to call home, it’s important to remember that the word “neighborhood” can take on a lot of different meanings. It can reference the geographic location, the vibe, the aesthetic, or even the tone of a potential home.

While Nashville is comprised of dozens of wonderful neighborhoods, they are all distinctly different. Belle Meade, known for its stately homes, mature trees, and prime location, for example, is completely different from East Nashville, which has a quirky vibe and millennial-driven culture.
We’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite neighborhoods and why we think each one of them could be a great neighborhood for you, depending on what you are looking for.
Green Hills
Green Hills is one of Nashville’s most complete neighborhoods in terms of attributes. The proximity to downtown Nashville is ideal. The inventory of homes ranges from more urban glass condos to stately homes on wooded lots. This area seemingly has it all.
Anchored by the tony Green Hills Mall and surrounding retail centers, the area is chock full of great places to eat, shop, and do everything from getting a haircut to buying furniture all without venturing more than a mile or two from home.
Whether you want to live above restaurants and shops in a condo tower, or in a 4,000-square-foot home on an acre lot, this area has both. It is hard to beat in terms of variety, proximity, and livability.
Belle Meade
If status is what you are looking for, then look no further than Belle Meade. This area is known for its large homes on mature lots with plenty of influential and even famous neighbors. One drive down Belle Meade Boulevard reveals stately architecture, manicured lawns, and a peaceful, quiet park-like setting.
Surrounded on one side by Percy Warner Park, Belle Meade is a mecca for those looking to enjoy the outdoors. The park on any given Saturday is ripe with hikers, joggers, and dogs ready for a day of play.
Franklin
Franklin, just 20 miles south of downtown Nashville, feels a bit more like a suburb than other Nashville-area neighborhoods. Ideal for younger families, Franklin abounds in restaurant and retail options, as well as an abundance of housing options and outdoor activities galore.
The biggest initial draw to this area is the Williamson County School System. Known across the country for being among the top public schools, the education system draws families, but the activities, the history, and the scenic beauty keeps them. Franklin is home to a historic Main Street district that is vibrant not only with Civil War history and beautiful old buildings that pre-date the war, but they have seen new life with boutiques, farm-to-table restaurants, and shops.
Leiper’s Fork
While the most remote location on our list in terms of proximity to Nashville, Leiper’s Fork offers something none of the other neighborhoods can: pastoral, scenic land, and a vibe that is true Mayberry.
Anchored by a small artisan village, Leiper’s Fork is home to historic homes, farms, rural acreage, and celebrities. Home to the likes of Justin Timberlake, Carrie Underwood, and Keith Urban, this area offers privacy, beauty, and the vibe of a small, rural town from 50 years ago infused with a modern-day hipster vibe that includes a farm-to-table restaurant, a fabulous art gallery, and hipster distillery, among others.
Situated just 10-15 minutes from Franklin, Leiper’s Fork may be one of the only places left in the world where an old-timer in well-worn overalls can chew the fat over a cup of coffee with a world-famous musician, who comes and goes unrecognized.
